Women's Day 2026

Today we celebrate the strength, courage and achievements of women everywhere. On this Women’s Day we reflect on progress, support one another, and look forward to what is possible when women are empowered and valued. This year’s Women’s Day theme ‘Give to Gain’ puts an emphasis on the power of reciprocity, and how when society invests in women and give them opportunities, their contributions then turn into further societal gains.

In the Maldives, women have always contributed heavily to our community. The amazing work that they do should never go unacknowledged. We wanted to highlight some of the incredible women in our community and the meaningful work that they do.

Hishmath & Jeehan - Tiny Hearts of Maldives

Co-founder of Tiny Hearts, Hishko has been working closely with the community since the Tiny Hearts of Maldives was founded in 2009. As the Chairperson of Tiny Hearts of Maldives, Jeehan also plays a vital role in the work done by Tiny Hearts. The main goal of the NGO has always been to save as many children as possible from Congenital Heart Disease, but Hishko, Jeehan and the Tiny Hearts team go above and beyond in their work to fulfil their goal. As the co-founder and one of the main driving forces behind Tiny Hearts, they have been continuously working towards helping as many children get tested for congenital heart disease and assisting in getting treatment for those that were diagnosed as well. She has also been closely working with the families, providing support for them as they navigate the diagnosis. The three main campaigns run by the NGO; Care for Tiny Hearts, Save a Tiny Heart and Healthy Heart Programme, are all very successful in their own terms.

Fira - Bakes by Fira

Fira is an at home baker who just celebrated the 10th anniversary of her baking business, Bakes by Fira. She is known in our community for the intricate pointillism designs she creates on cakes using buttercream, and bringing creativity to life in the things she makes. She recently worked alongside Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC) Maldives to promote the importance of healthy nutrition for children. She organised fun and engaging activities for the children, and provided education through said activities. She also conducts baking classes for children, teaching them new skills as well as helping them to grow. It was an honour to have worked with Fira.

Dhafeena - KO Movement Studio

Dhafy founded KO Movement Studio in December 2023. Creating a calm space for wellness to take centre stage, she teaches classes that encourage mindfulness, balance, and movement. A yoga instructor and fitness and wellness professional, Dhafy has created a space in which the community can get together and to work on their health and wellbeing together, in a supportive atmosphere surrounded by people with similar goals.

Shimanie - Creative Jous

Shimanie is an artist who is passionate about ensuring art is accessible and inclusive for everyone. She is an art teacher who teaches people of all ages, encouraging everyone to venture into art. She creates a space for her students where curiosity is welcome and creative expression is encouraged. In her work to make art accessible for everyone, she holds art classes for SEN students, encouraging them to explore art and creative freedom.

We are extremely grateful to have worked closely with Shimanie last year to release our collaborative collection Shimanie x Island Bazaar.

Hidha - Kasabu by Hidha

Hidha’s work is centered around the traditional weaving of kasabu. She has always emphasised the cultural significance of weaving, and in a time where such practices are at risk of fading, she is playing a major role in promoting the art form and helping keep it alive. Through her workshops, Hidha has shared her knowledge of traditional weaving and its significance in order to highlight the importance of our culture. She is consistently working to make sure kasabu continues to be appreciated and traditional weaving carries into the future.

Zenisha - ARC Maldives

Zenisha is a co-founder of Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC) Maldives, an NGO dedicated to protecting children and promoting their wellbeing, safety, and their rights. Through ARC, she has advocated for stronger protection of children’s rights in the Maldives and has raised awareness about the different issues affecting children. Zenisha has worked to support vulnerable communities and assist young people in getting better opportunities across the country. Her work with ARC plays an important role in making sure that children’s rights are emphasised and letting their voices be heard.

Zuruwath - Mindfields Inc.

Zuroo Majid is the co-founder of Mindfields Inc and a management consultant. Through her work at Mindfields, she encourages organizations to build stronger relationships and leadership in their communities and supports learning that has a positive impact beyond the work environment. Through professional development consultations, Zuroo has shared her expertise in order to help others grow - as leaders and professionals as well as beyond the scope of work.

Zuroo is also a co-host at Kinbi Villa in Goidhoo. She works closely with the local community in Goidhoo, fostering relationships with them and contributing to the local community. It was a privilege for us to have worked with Zuroo in the past.

As we celebrate Women’s Day, we are reminded that progress is shaped by the dedication, generosity and the resilience of women within our communities. The women highlighted here represent just a small glimpse of the many individuals whose work uplifts others and creates meaningful change. Their efforts inspire reflection, encourage collaboration, and remind us that when women are supported and empowered, the benefits extend far beyond individuals to strengthen our society.
